See also the matching Margeret’s vest.
Aim for Men’s Medium finished size.
44” chest around
4.75” shoulder width
7” neck wide
6.75” V neck depth
10” armhole depth
14” body length
My gauge with yarn held doubled on US6 needles is 20 sts = 10 cm / 4”
That is equal to size #3 for sts (220 body sts) and size #5 for dimensions (45”)
Found it easy to make mistake doing broken rib (k1 p1) from WS. So changing to purl on WS and RS is (p1 k1)

Worked back straight to 7.75” (32 x2 rows) before starting inc for about 3.25”
Armhole came to 12” (without ribbing).

PU for left shoulder purlwise on WS because I’m (p1 k1) RS and purling on WS. Inc for neck as written. Inc for armhole after 64 rows (32 purl bumps).
Left shoulder ends at 47 sts. 14 sts inc for neck. 13 sts inc for armhole.
Repeat mirrored for right shoulder.

Aahh! Because of my bigger gauge, the slope for neck inc is too long (came to about 11”) for a men’s vest. Frogging back to change to neck inc every 4 rows instead after 4 of 6-row inc. 64 rows plus 3 more rows. About 8” deep (without neck ribbing).
Begin armhole inc with the last (14) neck inc. 32 purl bumps.
Working right and left shoulders at the same time.
Join right and left shoulders. Continue flat for front and armhole inc to match back.
Join for body.
