This is the second hat I’m making with sock yarn this year because I’m sick of making socks. It’s also the second time I’m knitting with Koigu. I love this color. It’s mint green and gray with specks of darker gray and brown. Like the pattern, it reminds me of stones on the beach!

If you’re a beginner who wants to try some challenging new techniques, this is a good pattern to do it. It involves knitting in the round and two lace motifs that are written out, not charted. It’s a good springboard pattern to build up to more advanced lace knitting. Knitting the horseshoe lace motif is a good way to learn how to read your knitting, if that makes sense.

This project is part of a larger effort to destash by knitting hats and cowls for my family members who live up north. The hat-and-cowl sets won’t be exact matches, but it’ll be a way for me to find some new patterns and knit things I enjoy.
