Notes

Everyone’s talking about the movie ‘Finding Dory’ this summer, so I wanted to make some little fishy sandals to capture the mood. I love the color of Nemo, so went with Orange and white fish on a turquoise background.
The soles are made with Lily Sugar n’Cream in Jute - this is a great yarn for soles - really sturdy and thick - almost like oldfashioned string here in the UK - not much give, so no good for the uppers. Instead, I chose Drops Garn Studio Cotton Merino - which is simply gorgeous. This is a light, fairly fine dk, so I doubled the strand and worked on 4mm crochet hook (find the other end of the yarn at the center of the skein, and work two strands together). This yarn has great ‘bounce’ so lovely and soft and quite elastic - great for baby shoes. It also comes in nice colors - the Turquoise is fantastic (photo’s don’t do it justice!).
The pattern is very detailed, and making the sandal is very quick and easy. You have to sew the straps to the sole, so there is a bit of stitching, but using these yarns it’s very quick and easy, and easy to get a nice finish so you don’t have to be an expert by any means!
The fish are made with a single strand of light dk on a small 3mm crochet hook. These are a bit fiddly, so go slowly. Because the fish is the feature, take your time and try to get a nice smooth finish - it’s worth it in the end.
So that’s it - I hope you enjoy the pattern. Obviously you don’t have to add the fish - you could just leave the sandals plain. Alternatively, if you’re new to crochet, it would be easier to work the fish without stripes, using one color instead - equally nice, and just as original.
Enjoy Finding Dory, and get working on these fishy sandals in time for the beach!
