I finished this on September 30, 2018. It only took me 1,156 days! I have no idea what the powers that be at the NC State Fair will think of my work, but the afghan is “ta-done!” and i am looking forward to whatever is next, and i you want to learn more about how this project came to be, you can read the last blog post in a series of 110 blog posts about this endeavor

I am 23 days into my FOURTH attempt at finishing this project for the North Carolina State Fair. It seems I am on track to finish it this year, but I am driving extra carefully and chewing my food thoroughly because it never occurred to me the project would take this long.

I didn’t finish this as planned in either 2015 or 2016, but I may finally be on track to get this done. Fingers crossed with my nose to the crochet grindstone.

This project is going a lot more slowly than I would like, in part because it keeps getting more complicated and in part because I am painting my mom’s condo and that is taking a lot of time. But I am going to just die if I don’t get this done this year.
My grandmother was about eight years younger than I am now when she died, and if left a hole in my father’s life that never got filled. I really want to finish this project to honor her life.

Game Back On! I can register to enter the 2016 State Fair today, so I will. I pulled out all the pieces from last year (you can read all about it here), I ordered yarn that I hope will be the perfect color for framing each panel and well as creating a frame around the entire piece, and I have an idea (fingers crossed) that I am hoping will work to finish the center panel. I will be inconsolable if I don’t get this done this year, so I need to get very, very busy.

I missed the October 12, 2015, deadline to have this piece in this year’s state fair, so this is now my 2016 North Carolina State Fair project.
While I was disappointed not to have finished it in time, I realize that even if I had been able to work on it all day every day from August 1, it still would not be finished, so I am feeling less disappointed.

This year’s state fair piece is based on my paternal grandmother’s life. I never met her, so it’s a bit of a challenge that way. I’m hoping I do a good job.
