Raveler ‘pfaye’, Pamela, gifted me two skeins of this yarn so I could make a cardigan for the ‘Bundles of Love Charity’. So I’ve called this project ‘Pamela’s Present’! And bonus - since the cardigan took only one skein, now I can make another one with the second skein!
DIRECTIONS
(Note: Instructions have been tweaked 9-15-2022 so that the raglan seams will have a more defined edge to them. For an example, see ‘Pink Present Cardigan’ photos.)
Neckband
Cast on 51 sts with SMALLER needles using the ‘1x1 ribbed’ Alternating Long Tail Cast-On method, starting and ending with ‘p2’ for edge sts.
Work 5 rows of 1x1 rib, ending with a RS row.
Next Row (WS): P8, pm, p9, pm, p17, pm, p9, pm, p8.
Begin raglan shaping and moss st patt
Change to LARGER needles.
Row 1 (RS): K1, work (k1, p1) to last st before m, kfb, * sm, k1, m1L, knit to 1 st before m, m1R, k1, sm *, m1L, p1, work (k1, p1) to m, m1R; rep from *-* once more, m1Lp, k1, work (p1, k1) to last st, k1 = 8 sts inc’d
Row 2: Purl
Row 3: Work (k1, p1) to last st before m, kfb, * sm, k1, m1L, knit to 1 st before m, m1R, k1, sm *, m1L, p1, work (k1, p1) to m, m1R; rep from *-* once more, m1Lp, k1, work (p1, k1) to end = 8 sts inc’d
Row 4: Purl
Rep rows 1-4 two more times = 99 sts
Add in German short rows to raise the back neck
Short Row 1 (RS): Work as est to third marker, sm, k1, turn,
MDS, sm, p31 back to second marker, sm, p1, turn,
MDS, sm, m1L, p1, work (k1, p1) to next m, m1R, sm, knit the DS, m1L, k to one st before last m, m1R, k1, sm, m1Lp, k1, work (p1, k1) to last st, k1 = 109 sts; 10 sts inc’d
Next Row (WS): P71 to the DS (it’s after the third marker), sm, p the DS, p to end.
Short-Row 2 (RS): Work as est to last marker, turn,
…MDS, p84 back to first marker, do not slip m, turn,
…MDS, k24 to next m, sm, k2, work (p1, k1) to last st before next m, k1, sm, k24 to DS, knit the DS, sm, m1Lp, work (k1, p1) to last st, k1 = 117 sts; 8 sts inc’d
Next Row (WS): P100 to DS (it’s before the last marker and slipping m as you go), p the DS, p to end.
There should be 16 sts for each of the fronts, 25 sts for each of the sleeves, and 35 sts for the back.
Divide for body and sleeves
Next Row (RS): K1, * work (k1, p1) to 1 st before m, k1, rm, slip 25 sts to waste yarn, rm, cast on 5 sts; rep from * once more, work (k1, p1) to last st, k1 = 77 sts.
Next Row (WS): Purl
Cont in est moss pattern until body measures 4.5” long and ending with a RS row.
Begin bottom rib
Change to SMALLER needles.
Set-up Row (WS, Inc): * P10, pfb; rep from * five more times, p to end = 83 sts.
Work 5 rows of 1x1 rib, starting and ending with ‘k2’ for edge sts.
Note: To minimize the number of ends to weave in later, the work will get turned a couple times in order to make the buttonbands. The bottom hem is done but do NOT not break yarn and do not cast off sts. Leaving live sts on needle, rotate work 90 degrees to the right to begin buttonband.
Right buttonband
Using a SECOND needle the same size as the smaller needle, pick up pick up 3 sts per 4 rows along the right front edge. Make sure to have an odd number of sts.
Next Row (WS): P1, * p1, k1; rep to last 2 sts, p2.
Work 6 more rows as est.
With WS facing, bind off buttonband sts loosely and in pattern, do not cut yarn, turn the work and continue binding off the sts along bottom hem. (Note: You will need to make 3 or 4 chained sts along bottom edge of the buttonband to reach the live sts waiting on the first needle for bottom hem.)
Do not cut yarn. Instead turn the work 90 degrees to the right to begin left buttonband.
Left buttonband
With WS facing, insert needle to pick up sts FROM THE RS (this can be futzy), 3 sts per every 4 rows, making sure to have the same number of sts as for the right buttonband. (If this is too confusing doing this with the WS facing you, simply cut yarn and then join with new yarn with RS facing as is more typical.)
Next Row (RS): K1, * k1, p1; rep from * to last 2 sts, k2.
Next Row (WS): P1, * p1, k1; rep from * to last 2 sts, p2.
Buttonhole row (RS): Work in rib making 5 buttonholes (yo, k2tog) evenly spaced across the row.
Work 3 more rows as est in rib patt.
With RS facing, bind off loosely in patt.
SLEEVES
Return 25 sts from waste yarn to needles.
Using LARGER needles and starting at center of underarm, pick up 4 sts, knit across 25 sleeve sts, pick up 3 more sts at underarm = 32 sts.
Next Rnd: K3, k2tog, k to last 4 sts, SSK, k2 = 30 sts.
Knit 11 rnds.
Dec Rnd: K1, k2tog, k to last 2 sts, SSK = 28 sts
Work the last 12 rnds once more = 26 sts.
Knit until arm measures 5” from underarm.
Cuff
Change to SMALLER needles.
Knit 1 rnd.
Work 1x1 rib for 6 rnds.
Bind off loosely in patt.
Finishing
Weave in ends. Sew on buttons. Block.
