I started crafting because I love the idea of making something out of nothing. I inherited a ton of fabric and clothes when my Mom died that she had saved for sewing projects. Any wearable clothes were donated, but that left a lot. I started making quilts, but any reused fabric failed first. Matching seams doesn’t thrill me, and quilting is a chore that I don’t want to pay someone else to do. Goes against the DIY spirit. So I keep being attracted to rag rug posts on Pinterest.

I ripped and/or cut similar weight fabrics into zig zag continuous strips about an inch to an inch and a quarter and started to play. Used scissors instead of rotary cutter and mat since pieces were odd shapes. Found lots of things not to do with rag yarn. Googled how to crochet a flat circle in single crochet. Decided I didn’t need rugs, but I did need placemats. Love how these came out. Started each with 8sc in a magic circle. Did not join, just started working next round in a spiral. Was tacking new strips together with thread, but ended up just using a new piece when the old one ran out and working over both (short) ends to secure. Finished with a slip to join. Circles are variable, but as close as I could get them. Three are 13 rounds and one is 14.

They read bigger if the outside round is light. But they stack nearly the same size. I actually finished all four, then decided to take a round off the one that looked biggest and add it to the one that looked smallest. Included the first photo at the end. Then as soon as I did that, it made the originally smallest one look like the biggest. So I keep them spread out at our places at the table. Plan to make more =)
