Found a ball of white yarn that feels like Super Saver and picked up a G hook to try winging a gift bag. Started with the circle I use for my market bags:
Magic circle, close with chain, work sc1, ch1 (faux dc), then 11 more dc in circle. Tighten up circle. (Weave the end back through the sc1,ch1 faux dc and crochet over tail in next round to secure.) Slip to top of faux dc to join round. 12 sts
Round 2: Ch1. In space between dc behind slip, work faux dc, then dc2 in each space around until back to faux dc, work one more dc in that same space. Slip to faux dc. 24 sts.
Measured against wine bottle at this point and decided it would be a tight fit so added a third round. Worked faux dc behind join. Worked dc1 in space, dc2 in space around to faux dc, worked one more dc in space with faux dc. Slip to join.
Begin body. Chain 1. Do not backtrack this round so body can spiral without joins. Continuing to work between the dc, dc 1 in next space, sc 1 in next space around. When back to the chain, ignore it, and continue to work pebble stitch (alternating sc and dc) with sc in the dc stitches below and dc in the sc stitches below.
Decided to just use up the ball of yarn and stop with a slip stitch after an sc. Will stand up by itself. Wove ribbon under the dc stitches.
For second bottle, used this ball of green that I think is Homespun. Used a larger I hook and stopped with two rounds of circle. Instead of working the first round of pebble stitch between the stitches as before, I worked into the stitches the regular way and began this round with an sc. When I got back around to the chain, I skipped it and worked my next dc into the beginning sc. Either way works. It didn’t show in this yarn, so didn’t bother to include photos of construction. But since it was hard to see the stitches, I did a round where I substituted chains for the sc to give me posts to slip a ribbon through. Then continued until the ball ran out.
Since I had larger holes to fill, I decided I could crochet a tie for the second one. Picked up a lighter yarn and a G hook. Chained 50. Worked a five dc shell in the third chain and nine more 6dc shells. Worked slip into each chain back to beginning, then chained 50 and repeated for other side. Hid tails, then wove through posts to tie. Liked the look of the second one cuffed.

Itchy fingers so grabbed this ball of yarn, an F hook, and began another one. Did three rings of the bottom circle and worked first round into the stitches instead of between. Used the ch1, sc1 beginning and skipped the chain to start the spiral. Good way to use up a beautiful yarn that makes me think Carolina (UNC) blue - that’s bad - every time I make something with it.
This is definitely my favorite. Worked three rounds in the circle between posts pattern, then began the body with chain, sc in next stitch, dc in next stitch repeat from around back to chain, which I skipped, then worked the next dc in the beginning sc to start the spiral. Did mark that chain to get an idea of where I was in the round, but it doesn’t matter. Worked about 8 inches (length of the remote, then did a round substituting a chain for each sc. That leaves a row that is slightly askew to run the ribbon through, but it doesn’t matter once it is tied. Tried on bottle and worked to top of bottle, then ended with a slip after an sc. Since I wasn’t out of yarn, decided to try a shell border. Chained one to begin, skipped a stitch, then worked 6 dc in next stitch, skipped a stitch, worked an sc in next stitch, repeat from around, end with sc in same space as beginning slip. Fasten off, weave in ends.
Loved the contrast of this other textured yarn leftover I found in my basket. Great way to use up non standard stuff. Worked the same tie as before, but realized I should have left a beginning (and ending tail that is longer than the length I plan to make the tie half so that I can weave the tail all the way to the shells to bury them better. Used the same hook I had out and previous tie pattern:
Chained 50. Worked a five dc shell in the third chain and 6dc shells in the next 9 chains. Worked slip into each chain back to beginning, then chained 50 and repeated for other side. Hid tails, then wove through posts to tie. Coaxed the ruffles into shape. Liked the look of the second one cuffed.
I actually tried leaving the two tails dangling together and pulling through the posts from the beginning/end point, then pulling the tails through like a scarf. But in this yarn at least, that wouldn’t tighten for me and I did not like the look. I did distort one of the tails pulling the ruffle through the mesh this time, but I liked how it looked with one more stretched.

Made tie with sc instead of slips for this year’s crop of gift bags.
