Gauge: 5 stitches in 1 inch, therefore for 22” hat cast on 110 stitches. Good reference: http://www.earthguild.com/products/knitcroc/marypat/hatca... Edited - needs to be a multiple of 4, so cast on 112 stitches. Used #8 needles, as recommeded in Josh’s Link Hat pattern, but after a few rows found the needles far too large. Frogged and started again with #6 needles.

Used both of the linked (ha!) Link Hat patterns above as reference, then made some adjustments. My adaptation:
Cast on 112 stitches on #6 circular needles. Place stitch markers every 28 stitches (four even sections of 28.)
Rows 1 - 10: K2, P2 rib
Rows 11 - 19: K all
Row 20: slip marker, ssk, k27 repeat three more times (108 stitches remain)
Rows: 21-30: K all
Row 31: slip marker, ssk, k26 repeat three more times (104 stitches remain)
Rows 32: 36- k all for 5 rows
Continue in six row chunks (one row for decreases, five rows straight knitting) for eight repeats. See photos for details.
Row 79: slip marker, ssk, k18, repeat three times
After row 79, start decreases after every four rows (instead of every five rows.) Repeat this pattern 12 times. See photo for details. Switched to DPNs around row 100.
Row 144: slip marker, ssk, k5, repeat three times
Rows 145 - 148: k
Row 149: slip marker, ssk, k4, repeat three times
Row 150: cut yarn leaving a tail long enough to run through the 12 remaining stitches using a tapestry needle. Pull tight and weave in ends.
Use a scrap of yellow or light neutral yarn to add one or two decorative cross-hatched Xes near the ribbing.
