I wanted compact squares so I used two chains in each corner but no chains between the treble clusters down the sides. I kept the squares small, with two centre rounds in different combinations of the colours and then all the third rounds in cream.

I used 9 x 11 squares, with the finished blanket measuring 35 inches x 28 inches (including the border).

I crocheted the granny squares together in strips using a slip stitch as per Lucy’s tutorial at Attic 24 (http://attic24.typepad.com/weblog/joining-granny-sqaures....). I did it with right sides together so the ridge was on the back but I rather liked the effect and would happily have that as the “right” side next time (see last two photos).

I then worked a round of treble crochets into the top of each stitch and finished with round of double crochets (in parchment).
