Notes

My dh will be going to a family wedding in WA state near his mother’s birthday. She has dementia & is in assisted living. Her favorite color is orange, so I decided to try to get a pair made for her birthday before he leaves.

I have increased to 52 stitches total (26 each needle) since my mil wear a narrow shoe. Will work to 2” total from cast on before starting patterning.

I have decided to start the gusset increases after the patterned portion is 7” from cast on, which makes the sole of the sock 7 1/2” or after 11 patterns that end with 2 knit rows.

When starting to turn the heel after finishing the gusset increases, I immediately picked up & twisted a stitch between my 2 circular needles at both the beginning & end of the sock to help in making sure there is no holes. But I ignored it until my last 2 rows of heel shaping. The directions say to ssk the k1 at the end of the knit rows, but I only had 2 stitches left for the ssk except for the picked up stitch, which I didn’t want to knit & have it become a longer section, so I just slipped in, wrapped it & slipped it again before going into my final decrease row. On that row I worked to the end, then wrapped the last stitch on my other circular needle before turning & knitting the picked up stitch with the 1st stitch of the row. At the end of the row, I did an ssk with the picked up stitch & last stich. Then moved into working normally after completing the 2nd sock heel.

I did 14 pattern repeats for the leg, 15 rounds of ribbing & then used the bind off recommended in the pattern, but really think I should have gone with 4x the width of the top of the socks before cutting the yarn. Had to go back & tighten things a bit to have enough yarn to finish them.

5.5 cm for toe to start of patterning. 19.5 cm to heel turn for foot. 16 pattern repeats on foot between start of patterning & end of heel turn or 64 rows. 13 cm from start of foot patterning to start of gusset increases (44 rows - 11 pattern repeats). 3 cm to start of patterning on leg from end if gusset increases.

13 cm from start of leg patterning to start of ribbing on leg - 12 pattern repeats or 48 rows. 4.5 cm for ribbing - bound off on 15th row of 2x2 ribbing. Leg length from end of gusset increases/heel turn finished - 20 cm.
