I call this “The Double Happiness Shawl”. My sister doesn’t wear wool and I knew I wanted a red yarn so I ended up using this red silk yarn that is much thicker than a lace weight. There were only six skeins (a total of 822 yds) at the store so I decided to make a combo scarf/ shawl. The pattern calls for 470 yds for the scarf and 900 for the shawl. I thought I would be safe doing an extra repeat of the winter branches and then using the scarf repeats for the rest. All went well until the last 7 1/2 rows. I ran out of yarn! and there was no more to be found! I even ordered a skein from an online website thinking that since Samira is hand dyed and has many colour variations the different dye lot wouldn’t much matter. When the new yarn arrived it was a totally different colour!! Could not be used. Everyone kept asking me why I couldn’t just cut the design short but I didn’t want to miss the beautiful border and I decided to frog it. I ripped 4 of the 6 skeins that I had knit. I took out 12 rows of the extra winter branches that I had knit and carried on and knit the whole thing again. Hence the “Double Happiness”. This is a lovely pattern, a joy to knit, and the yarn and colour were wonderful to work with too. The colour doesn’t penetrate the whole strand of yarn so bits of white show through sometimes but it doesn’t look that bad when it does. I could see knitting this pattern many times. I think my sister looks gorgeous in it and her favourite parts are the little points along the edge so that made ripping and knitting again worthwhile. I still had to leave off one row of knitting at the very end and I had about 24” of yarn left. I’ve been studying the pattern and I see that the edge of the shawl is really supposed to be more of an undulating edge and not the points after all. Oh well… my sister likes it like this and I’ll try a softer edge for myself.
