This time I’m following the pattern (see the Octagon http://www.ravelry.com/projects/dgou/mios-scarf for another take).
I started with 11 stitches instead of 19.
Thanks to Dr. Debby in Longmont for help Feb 11th, on getting the sections to line up (or rather, alternate) properly.
This scarf has had several rows crocheted by other folks who were intrigued by the pattern and the process.
It started out (as you can see from the older pictures) on a long metal crohook. When I got back to Pittsburgh I went in search of a shorter crohook, and one that was inline. I found Clover Bamboo hooks at a local craft store (I don’t recall which one). The shorter hook was much easier on my shoulder and the inline hook pulled through the stitches much easier for me.
However, the hook had no grooves in the side of the throat, so the yarn would spill out of the hook as I was turning it to draw the loops through. Since they were wooden hooks, I was able to do some filing and sanding to try adding groves… The closeup of the hooks shows the modified hook on top (6mm). The one below it is a smaller hook, but is there to show the general shape of the hook before the modifications. I’m still experimenting with the changes and need to get a finger grit sandpaper as the yarn isn’t moving quite as smoothly as it was pre-modification.
