My third attempt at Birkin:

1. I bought some nice subtle J&S shades, but they proved a bit too subtle and the yarn became Aamu.
2. I then hit on a ‘black and white’ theme and I decided to use up (as the ‘white’) some cream Shetland, brand unknown. When I’d finished the yoke patterning, the yoke length was way too deep (10.5” rather than 9”) and I wondered whether my unknown cream Shetland was more of a sportweight than a fingering. And so, I unravelled…
3. Finally, I splashed out lol, and bought 2 balls of cream J&S, reworked the yoke, only to find… it was still about 10.5” deep, rather than 9”.

And so the tale was told. This is my Birkin and I rather like it!

Mods: 2 colours, rather than 5. I knitted the yoke on the main gauge needle (rather than the 3.5mm) in an attempt to get a tighter gauge (a failure). Thus I used a 3.25mm needle throughout, with a 2.75mm for the ribbing. I’ve knitted the body to 13” (long enough with the extra length of the yoke), plus 2” bottom ribbing (I didn’t knit the split hem); and I knitted the sleeves full length (decreasing to 64sts) with 2” ribbed cuffs.

I also knitted the bobbles/nupps - not a mod, but I thought it would rather enhance a b/w version! Can you see them in the photos? hm, only just…
