I try to learn smoething new from each knitting project.
My first warm-weather knitted top.
I’ve always thought wool-knitted garments are worn only in winter. But after I saw Purl Bee’s pattern for the Cap Sleeve Lattice Top, I couldn’t resist and made my first woolen top for warmer weather!
The most visible departure from the original design was my choice of colours. I opted for a single-colour look as I find it more practical and wearable.
I also decided to knit in the round (no seams! no seams!).
I started with the lattice pattern on single-pointed needles with a provisional cast-on. I made it 2.5 cm/i inch shorter on both sides, as I noticed here on Ravelry that in some cases the lattice yoke is too deep and exposes underwear. That was definitely not the look I was aiming for! (My yoke measures 27 holes on the diagonal to/from the neck opening.)
Then I switched to stockinette stitch and knitted 2.5 cm/1 inch to compensate for the missing centimeters of the yoke (to keep the armholes big enough). I left the stitches on the single pointed needle.
I repeated the 2.5 cm/1 inch in stockinette stitch on the other side, using the round needle. After that, I joined the stitches on the back and the front for knitting in the round and continued knitting top-down.
I added some waist shaping and made the top longer.
After blocking, I realised the lattice yoke is still a tad longer than I’d like (19.5 cm/7.5 inches), ending just above my bra cups. I might try to shrink it a bit, or leave it as is and hope it won’t grow further!
Overall, a great design, highly recommended.
