I made the Wholring Star sweater from Kaffe Fassett’s Family Album book for Samantha (age 13) in 1993. I used all cotton yarns for this project. I adjusted the pattern so that it fit the size of the child and the weight of the yarns I was using. I made a standard crew-neck instead of the button-shoulder as I don’t really like that look. The sweater has since been worn by Rebecca, Maxx and now just about fits Victoria (age 13). In general I like the results, but if I was to do it again I would probably change some things:
-
Using smooth cotton yarns makes it more difficult to hide the ends by weaving them in. They tend to show through more than with wool (or wool-blend) yarns and the ends tend to come to the front every now and then. Perhaps if I were to knit it tighter the ends would stay hidden.
-
The neck hole is too large, so that it droops a bit. I would make the neck higher up, but due to the non-stretchiness of the cotton yarns, I’d need to make sure that it would still fit over the head.
