Notes

Size 1 (33.5”) - sweater will have 3.5” of positive ease. As reference, my full bust is 30”, waist is 25”, height is 5’6”.

Yarn A: Cascade Cantata
Yarn B: Berroco Aerial- mohair held double.

2” of ribbing.

Total body length is 19.75” (13” between the hem and underarm and 6.75” for the top above the underarm).

Each stripe is 12 rows. At a gauge of 28 rows for 4”, that means that each 12 row stripe is 1.75”.

Divide for the sleeves after 6.5 stripes- on a row 7. End the fronts after row 6 so that it is a half repeat on front and back to create a full stripe once joined.

The sleeve cuff seemed way too big for my wrist. So I decreased by 12 stitches instead of 2 on the decrease round before beginning the cuff as follows (total of 44 st):

K1, (K2tog, K2) 2 times, (K2tog, K3) 8 times, K2tog, K2, K2tog, K1

In retrospect, I could have decreased even further on the sleeve cuff as it is still a bit loose.

I took a break before finishing the button band to work on a test knit…

I don’t like sewing and so I decided to do a knitted-on double knit button band:

  • Using a US 5 long-corded needle, I picked up and knit around the entire button/neck band. I picked up at a rate of approximately 4 out of every 5 rows along the sides and in every stitch across the back of the neck.
  • I placed locking stitch markers on right side of the cardigan button-band as indicated in the pattern.
  • Starting at the bottom left corner of the button-band, where the yarn was already attached, I used a single double-pointed needle and a backwards loop cast on method to cast on 13 stitches on the left needle tip.
  • I worked the following two double knitting rows (each pair of rows “using up” one of the picked up (live) stitches until I reached the first locking stitch marker.

Double Knitting WS Row: (s1wyif, k1)X6 , p2tog the last stitch with the first live stitch, turn work.
Double Knitting RS Row: k1, (s1wyif, k1) to last st

I used this vertical buttonhole tutorial without cutting the yarn as a model for how I made my button holes.

I made each buttonhole per the video above and made them three pairs of rows each with a double yarn over.

To bind-off the button band:
k1 (k2tog, slip the k2tog over the remaining k st)repeat to the end.
