I don’t know how tight the original pattern maker was knitting to get 6sts per inch, but my hat turned out utterly enormous when I followed the pattern as written. I wound up going down a needle size and removing 24 sts (completely rewriting the charts). It’s still pretty big but I think it will fit the intended recipient.

In addition to the chart modifications, I also got rid of the first 15 rows. Instead, I knit in 1x1 rib for 15 rows, then did a row of k1 m1p, slipping the m1ps to waste yarn. Then I picked those up to make the second hat. I figured a regular ribbed brim would fit better.

My gauge turned out to be 5.5 sts per inch, finished hat size 22” circumference.
