Tips for reading the pattern: http://ithilien.eu/?p=69#more-69 (in Spanish)

27/03/09 -> 4mm hook and Katia Madison thread.

I had a rather hard time trying to figure out the star stitch, or at least a way I was satisfied with the results. I found some useful information here: link 1 and link 2. I have addressed my increasing and decreasing issues using some ideas I got from the previous links, and so I’ve decided to make the increasing stitches doing a star stitch with just 4 loops instead of the five loops of the regular stitches. These loops being: the loop on hook + the loop worked on the previous stitch closing loop + a loop worked on an intermediate loop + a loop worked on the base of the previous star stitch.

This sounds like a nightmare but it is clearer looking at a picture from one of the links above. Using these directions no new stitch of the previous row is used and you keep increasing.

My terminology:

  • ch - chain
  • DC - Double Crochet
  • p (plain) - star stitch (5 loops)
  • w (widen star stitch) - star stitch (4 loops)

And the rows:

Part 1:

Chain 83.
1.- 1DC, 1ch alternating till the end.
2.- 3ch, 10p, 1w, 1p, 1w, 9p, 1w, 9p, 1w, 1p, 1w, 10p. The stitch set (10p + 1w) at the begging and the ending are the shoulders increasings and are worked in every round of this part of the pattern.
3.- 3ch, 10p, 1w, 25p, 1w, 10p.
4.- 3ch, 10p, 1w, 12p, 1w, 1p, 1w, 12p, 1w, 10p. From this row until the end of this part the central part, between the shoulders, must increase in two stitches every row. I recommend placing a stitch marker in the central stitch.

Continue working for 11 rows more.

Note: The pattern states that you should work as described for the 4th row for 11 rows “every other row”.

Part 2 (skirt or bottom of cape):

30/03/09 -> I started with Modial’s Lucente yarn and a 5mm hook but after a few rows I realised it was better to go for a smaller gauge. So I returned to a 4mm hook.

01/04/09 -> The second part is quite straight forward, no mysterious stitches or increasings. I am just regretting not choosing a yarn with a smaller weight, maybe sport or even fingering. I’ll keep this in mind in case I decide to make another cape.

29/06/09 -> After some time with this project sleeping I’ve decided to finish it. It looks quite good, and I’m happy with the results. Only the edge is missing. I’m almost there :D

30/06/09 -> Viva! Only blocking left!

Photos coming soon :)
