Notes

My gauge with the 4mm was wildly off so I went down to a 3.5mm and didn’t bother swatching with that but went straight into making the socks, hoping that the try on as you go method will work out. Just using the one colour. Gunna aim for somewhere in between ankle and mid calf.

I am sticking to the size 4 dimensions though since the circumference at the ball of my foot measures 22.5 which is exactly size 4. Here’s hoping!

Nope, ripped it back to size 1 instructions and that seems okay. Still a little big which makes me worry it will stretch an awful lot with wear but still going with that.

The first sock is hilariously huge and I’m so tempted to mod the second for less rounds but pretty sure that will create more hassle than I can handle on my first sock project. So I might just stick with the same so they match. They’re wfh winter sockies, anyway. They don’t have to look perfect.

Okay, mods to the second sock (size 1 ending on 46 sts for foot section)

Non-gusset: omit the increases and only do 7 rounds. (4cms long on the inside from top of the post to top of the post)

Heel turn (5cms long)
Row 1: in the sc section, sc 18, leave 5 sts unworked. Turn
Row 2: ch 1, sc2tog, sc 11. Turn
Row 3: ch 1, sc2tog, sc across. Turn (7 rows to get a total of 5 sts)

Heel flap (shallow heel) (3.5 cms)
Row 1: ch 1, sc in first 5 sts, sc 8 down the side, sl st in next unworked st. Turn
Row 2: Do not ch 1, sk slst, sc across 13 sts, then sc 8 down the other side of heel turn, slst into next unworked st. Turn
Row 3: Do not ch 1, sk slst, sc 21, sc2tog (using last st that is not slst and next unworked st), sl st into next unworked st. Turn (4 rows of row 3 in total to use up all the instep stitches.)

DO NOT TURN at end of last row of heel flap.

Heel top (4cms high)
Round 1: brioche pattern around front of sock, sc across back of sock (25 sc) for 5 rounds
Round 2: brioche pattern around front of sock, sc2tog over first 2 scs, sc around til 2 scs remain, sc2tog over final 2scs (23 sts around back of foot)

Leg setup round: brioche pattern around front of sock, hdc in each st around back of sock. Skip last hdc at the back and front if necessary to make the pattern seamless.

Brioche pattern front and back: 12 rounds. And then the cuff for 4 rounds as per pattern.

So so happy with how this turned out!
