Finally making my Helga sweater! Lol, Helga Pataki is the character I identify with the most, and for a long time now I’ve wanted to celebrate that connection by making a sweater and older version of her would wear. So of course it had to be pink, and somehow I felt like it needed to be oversized and have chunky cables. Something feminine, not too girly, and also kind of off-beat. This pattern is just perfect! Took me a while to find the right color in the right weight, that would also look good on me, with enough in stock at my LYS. But I’m pretty satisfied with what I picked out.

The yarn is worsted instead of aran, so I’m using 5.5 and 2.75mm needles; I thought I’d need to size up, but my gauge swatch came out perfect? So that’s weird, but I’m not complaining.

Once again I am asking myself: why is this pattern written this way? I got into the chart, and when I looked up at the written instructions again, I saw it said not to do the first set of decreases for the back. Why would you not note that NEAR the chart? Also, I wish the cable symbol had been darkened; I ended up adding an extra row (two, if you count ws) between cables. That’s fine, since it didn’t affect the shape of the cables, and I think it’s gonna fit better with the extra rows, anyway… But it’s not gonna be that way for everyone? Maybe I should become a pattern-editor, or a test-knitter, because if there’s a chance for someone to miss or misread something, I’ll be the one to do it! Anyway, finished the back and am about a fourth of the way through the front.

Ok, so it WAS 6 rs rows in between every cable; the symbol for the cable just makes it hard to read. It’s shaded, too, but what I meant was that I think it should be shaded in a different color to make it easier to differentiate between cable and non-cable rows. Anyway! I’ve finished the front and am about halfway through the first sleeve.

Finished! I used a #2 needle for the ribbing. I didn’t skip stitches when I picked up for the waistband, so there are more than were called for, but it was too small when I did it the first time, and the skipped stitches bunched up a bit. I also did 36 rounds for the waistband instead of 15, as the latter was gonna be too short. Super happy with how it turned out!
