Notes

There is plenty of room for error in the manner in which this pattern is written, so I tried all the corrections to the pattern given on Ravelry comments and on this book errata page online. This a terrific hat!! Also, below the original in Bulky (5) yarn, I have also calculated for using Worsted yarn (4).

Here are the suggested corrections all on one page which you can copy, paste, and print out:

  1. Use the Wrap-Cast-On as shown in photo at left and in book to avoid a coin-sized hole in top of hat. (I’m including the first photo of several in the book as the original failed to show working end and bitter end. See book for full instructions on cast-on). This cast-on, also called “figure 8” is shown in this video. The video goes on to add two circular needles, but all the double-pointed-needle user has to do is wrap 6 sts. (three on each of two needles) and use a third dpn to Kfb (knit front & back see video) into each of those stitches to get 12 sts. to start.

  2. “M1 or Make 1” is different in this book than in most pattern instructions. The author expects you to Kfb (knit front and back - see video) in order to make one stitch. If you use any “pick up the bar between two stitches” form of M1 you end up with too many stitches too soon.

  3. Kfb means: “Knit into the front of a stitch and leave it on the left needle while you reach around and also knit into the back of the same stitch. Then drop it off the needle. This makes one extra stitch. Here is a youtube video showing the Kfb increase

After wrap cast on and increases to 12 sts. as shown in book begin with round 1, a plain knit round:

Rd. 1 and all odd rnds. Knit plain.

You have 12 stitches, and you are about to make additional stitches on every even-numbered row, using “Knit front and back” (Kfb).

Rd. 2 K1, Kfb into the next stitch; K1, Kfb into the next stitch…etc. repeating all around. (18 sts.)

Rd. 3 Knit plain
Rd. 4 K2, Kfb into the next stitch, repeating all around. (24 sts.)

Rd. 5 Knit plain
Rd. 6 K3, Kfb, repeating all around. (30 sts.)

Rd. 7 Knit plain
Rd. 8 K4, Kfb, rpt. (36 sts.)

Rd. 9 Knit plain
Rd. 10 K5, Kfb, rpt. (42 sts.)

Rd. 11. Knit plain
Rd. 12 K6, Kfb, rpt. (48 sts)

Rd. 13. Knit plain

Stop here for small/medium

For Large Size:
Rd. 14. K7, Kfb, rpt. (56 sts)
Rd. 15 K plain

Change to circular when work becomes large enough.

For Bulky yarn, these are the crown and rise corrections:
_______________
From Ravelry Comments on this hat:
One ravelrer said:
Correction of error when you get to “Turn of crown and rise”.
The third line is “With color A: P 5 rounds” should read K 5 rounds

Turn-of-Crown and Rise CORRECTION:

With B: K 1 rnd
P 5 rnds
With A: K 5 rnds
With B: K 1 rnd
P 5 rnds
With A: K 5 rnds
With B: K1 rnd
P5 rnds.

with wrong side facing, BO loosely and weave in ends.

Stretchy Bind-off:

You have just finished a purl row, so BO in purl.
Purl 2 sts. onto right needle.
Insert left needle into the front of these two sts, and purl two together.
||: Purl 1, insert LN into two sts. on RN and Purl 2 tog. :|| repeat between symbols to end. Pull cut off end through last st. Weave in.

For worsted yarn:
To fit a 23” (large adult) head:

Using 4.5mm dpns
Cast on 6 sts. using figure 8 method shown in this video.

Knit each of the sts. once, then Kfb into each one to double the stitch count to 12. Begin alternating plain rds. with increase rds. as for Bulky yarn above.

Continue to increase the crown until you reach 84 sts. (K12, Kfb) then knit plainly without further increases. Change to 16” circ. needle when dpns become too full.

Crown is 3.5” in radius.
Each purl stripe is 2.5” inches wide (14 rows) and each knitted stripe is 2.25” (12 rows) wide. Overall length lightly flattened is 12 inches from crown to rolled hem.

Bound off using stretchy SSK BO.
Hat fits nicely and can be styled in several different ways due to excess length being used up by Purl stripes.
