I made the pattern as written, except for two extra rows on the last section to make sure I used all the darkest shade of the wool.

I put an extra stitch in the chains in the last three rows to allow for the extra depth.

I had very little yarn left over.

The shawl desperately needed blocking so I steam-blocked it but I was too lazy to put a pin in each picot.
