I used Yet Another Market Bag for the base but the mesh was too open for the yarn I was using.
I had to experiment to find the best way to join each round and the single ch/hdc join was not intuitive. I started by making two chain and a dc, but that gave far too large a space even though the stitch count sounded right to me.
The handle is based on Elisa’s Nest Tote but I reduced the icord to five stitches as even that was a bit of a reach for me.
Magic ring
Base
3 ch (counts as dc), 11 dc. (12dc)
2ch (does not count as stitch) 2dc in same stitch, 2dc in each dc, sl st to top of 1st dc. (24 dc)
2ch, (does not count as stitch) dc in same stitch, 2dc in next stitch, ^dc in next stitch, 2dc in next stitch^ to end of round, sl st to 1st dc.
Continue in this way with the number of stitches between increases increasing by 1 each round so that you are increasing 12 stitches in each round.
I did 8 rounds, then did two rounds without any increases. Do as many as are needed for the size of bag you want.
Starting Mesh Pattern
Next round, ch 1, sc in same st, ^ch3, skip 2, sc in next stitch^ all round to last 2 stitches; ch 1, sk 2, sc into top of 1st stitch.
Repeating mesh pattern
ch 1 sc in same space. ^Ch 4, sc in next space^ all round ending with ch 1, hdc in top of 1st sc.
Continue with repeating pattern until bag is desired height. I did 17 or 18 rounds.
Ending Mesh Pattern
ch 1 sc in same space. ch 2, sc in next space all around, ending with sl st into 1st sc.
Top Band
Ch 1, sc in every stitch.
Repeat the last round to give the desired size of top band. Do not break yarn.
Handles
Needs 2 double pointed needles (dpns).
Chain 5 and slip onto a double pointed needle (dpn).
knit 4, sl 1, pick up and knit next stitch of edging (going through both loops), psso. Slide stitches to other end of dpn.
Starting with stitch furthest from working yarn, knit 4 (give a bit of a tug with first stitch), sl 1, pick up and knit next stitch on edging, psso, slide stitches to far end of needle
Repeat until you have about an inch, then make the icord handle.
knit 5, slide stitches to far end of needle, repeat.
Handle edging is 24 stitches, with 24 stitches unworked at each end (=96).
I finished by sewing the attached icord ends together.
The handles were each 62 rows long.
Finished height including handles is 18inches unstretched and 26” inches including handles when full of apples and bananas.
