Notes

The beautiful decreases of this hat really caught my attention.

I used an Aran weight yarn and 112 stitches, so that the toque will fit the larger heads in my family (24” circumference), and it ended up perfectly roomy. I used p2tog for all of the purl decreases, and paired ssk/k2tog for the knit decreases.

Used 102 grams of yarn (just under 1 skein).

Put 28 sts between stitch markers at start of decreases like so:

  • Stop knitting one stitch before original start of round (between two purl stitches). Place first marker at that spot.
  • Count 28 more stitches and place second marker.
  • Count 28 more stitches and place third marker.
  • Count 28 stitches from 3rd marker and place fourth marker.
  • Count 14 stitches from the 4th marker and put in a fifth, different colour marker to mark new start of round.

HegeKlaseie sums up the decrease rules perfectly:

if the stitch second to next marker is a knit-stitch, choose ssk/k2tog, if it is a purl-stitch, make a p2tog.

The pattern is set up properly if you remember to start your decrease rounds between two purls. Otherwise, just remember the decrease rules and adjust as needed!
