August 13, 2010: It’s finished! And only 2.5 months after getting back from Iceland, too. I made modifications from the original pattern to get a more modern-fitting sweater. Finished chest measurement was about 39” (99 cm) with 34” sleeves (measured from side of neck opening to cuff):

• Knit the body on 180 sts
• Cast on 48 sts for sleeves, then increased every 8th row twelve times (64 sts). Knit straight until they were 49 cm long.
• Put 14 sts onto holder for underarm
• Added 3 short rows to raise the back of the neck as per Knitting in the Old Way pp 63-64 & pp 106-107.
• Made up my own hybrid yoke pattern using my imagination, the horses from this sweater, and a bit of pattern 18 “Var” from Lopi book 29.
• I omitted the white eye on the horse. I think it looks better without.
• I did not twist my floats together as I went to make them shorter - I just let them lay there, 12 stitches long in some cases! After wearing, the lopi has fulled enough that they’re well stuck down.

June 2010: Oops, I’ve knitted myself into a corner with this one. I wanted a more modern fit, so completely changed the numbers to fit my measurements, but forgot that I have to fit in the 18 stitch chart pattern once I get up to the yoke, and guess what -- 260 stitches does not fit an 18 stitch repeat! Had to put more stitches onto the underarm than I was originally planning to get the 252 sts, but it worked out just fine.
