Dollywood beanies!
My hat on the left, mom's on the right.
Wearing our Dollywood hats AT DOLLYWOOD!
I thought we'd have people asking where we got them at least. Thousands of people, not a single person mentioned them the entire night. *shrugs*

Mom's bear statue bears wanted to try on the hats.

I charted out the name on graph paper, and worked it until it would fit in the space I had on the hat. I got it down to 42 spaces, and ultimately CO 48 sts.

I wanted a solid field of white behind the word, so I clipped out sections of white from the Red Beacon colorway, and used them with the Pointsettia colorway, leaving 2 rows above and below the word.
I made a real mess on the game table downstairs at mom's cabin over the break, with all the knitting and designing I was doing.
I started above the word with the next candycane section of the Red Beacon colorway (cut away remaining white to get to it), and let the yarn start self-striping from there, but I went too far, starting the decreases too late.
I ripped back and started the decreases immediately after the word banner.
It was impossible to keep this table clean while I worked.

After finishing up the top, I pulled out the provisional cast on below the word banner, put my needles back in, did a bit with the next section of barberpole, then quickly switched to the Pointsettia color, did some 1x1 rib, and finished with a sewn bind off.

I wanted the rim to be bigger, but the hat was already long enough. I intended this to be for mom, but it fit me better, so I kept it for me, and made a second. I used the same cast-on, but switched to smaller needles, and it fit her quite well.

I wasn't sure how well the Pointsettia and Red Beacon would go together. I only used the candycane sections of the latter. I think it turned out great. I like the sparkle from the Pointsettia.

Floats!
I cast on the same 48 sts for mom's hat, but went down from US 13 to US 11 needles. It fit her well. It was very slightly slouchy, which she liked.
I was more purposeful with the striping in mom's hat, switching the yarns intentionally above the word, and moving to all Pointsettia at the top. You can see I've picked up the stitches below the words, to work down to the rim for the bottom, which finished with 1x1 rib, and a sewn bind off.
