I was very heavily influenced by Albert Small’s Mosaic 1 entry in The Quilt Index for this project and I think that’s evident. Of course, I didn’t do the actual version justice, but hopefully it stands on its own merits.
Jan 17/12: Started last night with Swish Worsted in Gulfstream.
May 18/12: using up some worsted-ish cotton in my stash. I have long since lost the labels, so it’s never even been entered into my Rav stash.
May 19/12: I forgot to mention that I’ve been using Judy’s Magic Cast-on for this batch of hexis. Also, I think I’m going to omit the last pre-bind-off row in the pattern to have a more “square” hexipuff. I was finding that they looked a bit too long on the decrease side, otherwise. I think I’m going to try using Kitchener stitch to bind off in the future; the suggested bind-off is somewhat slow and fiddly.
May 20/12: Kitchener stitch works like a dream. I can’t believe it took me this long for it to occur to me.
May 23/12: I’ve used up my stash of Nova Real Jeans. I can’t say I’ll miss that stuff.
May 24/12: I think I’ve used up all my DK and worsted cotton yarn. 31 “hexis” done. Update: 33 hexis done.
May 25/12: used up the last of my Patons Country Garden DK, which wasn’t in my Rav stash. That was the yarn I used in my very first sweater!
May 28/12: mental note: I can double fingering-weight yarns to yield a swatch at approximate gauge.
May 31/12: hoo, boy. A quick calculation last night indicates that I’m looking at creating approximately 600 hexis for a queen-sized afghan. I suspect I already have all that yarn in my stash, given that I have just over 50 hexis made and have barely made a dent in what I’ve got. Still, this is going to be a ton of work! Fortunately, each hexi is quick work and I think I can keep things interesting by throwing in new techniques. I’ve uploaded a new picture in crappy tungsten lighting, but at least it shows all the hexis I’ve made so far.
Jun 6/12: I’ve worked my way through the first dye lot of my Mission Falls yarn. Here’s where I lament the demise of this yarn. It wasn’t perfect (i.e., it’s splitty, fuzzes easily and pills), but it was warm, soft, springy and came in some durn attractive colourways. You shall be missed, Mission Falls.
Jun 9/12: goodbye, Mission Falls “raspberry” and “pistachio”. You were loved.
Jun 10/12: holy poop! I seem to have just over 60 of these made! Up you go, progress indicator!
Jun 12/12: ripped out an old, crocheted hat to get a bit more of the Mission Falls 1824 in “raspberry”. Hardly ever used it ‘cause it was too big, figured it would better serve me as part of the blanket.
Jul 6/12: every last shred of Mission Falls raspberry has been used up! On to “ink”.
Jul 7/12: “ink” is used up. Bye-bye, “oyster”! Now, on to black! Also: I currently have about 90 of these made!
Jul 10/12: that kills my Mission Falls stash! I’ve begun working through some of the Debbie Bliss stuff I have available.
Jul 14/12: if I hold sport-weight yarn doubled, I end up with a hexi that’s just slightly heavier than one from using aran weight yarn.
Aug 15/12: used up the KnitPicks Bare Gloss that I dyed for Caty’s gloves. Held double and used up some of the KnitPicks Swish Worsted from her toque to finish the hexi.
Oct 19/12: I currently have 121 machine-washable hexis and 46 hand-wash hexis made for a total of 167 hexis complete. Up you go, progress-indicator!
Oct 27/12: current tally: 121 machine-washable hexis and 59 hand-wash hexis for a total of 180. Another progress meter boost!
Oct 31/12: I can’t believe that I’ve managed to use up the remainder of my Cascade 220 yarn!
Feb 2/13: everyone around here has had a bout of the stomach flu in the past week, so I had to set aside Dark and Stormy for the day and got 1-1/2 hexis done instead.
Mar 19/13: 307 hexis done! Just over half complete!
Apr 25/13: I am one hexi away from being 3/4 done!
Apr 28/13: all of my random worsted weight yarn has been hexi’d! I’m now holding double the three skeins of fingering weight yarn I have no intended use for. I’ve got a yarn shipment coming in soon, so I’ll be back to knitting other projects and using up the scraps here once that’s arrived.
May 28/13: I’m using up the leftovers from my version of the Honey Cowl, then will work a sweater with the remaining madelinetosh yarn I’ve got (Lapis and Fathom). Any leftovers from that will be used for this project too.
Aug 15/13: I’ve hit the 90% Completion mark!
Aug 21/13: I should be able to crack the 95% mark with the first skein of Beavertail I purchased. I might even have enough worsted yarn left over from my recent purchases of Malabrigo Rios and Cascade Pacific that I don’t have to buy any yarn expressly for this project.
Aug 23/13: I’ve officially cracked 95% (with a considerable amount of Beavertail left over)!
Aug 24/13: I’m a mere 25 hexis away from being done knitting this, so I’ve begun wet(!)-blocking the hand-wash only hexis. The white/cream and yellow ones are drying today. Update: I have finished the Beavertail skein and have only 20 hexis left to go until I’m done knitting for this project!
Aug 28/13: a mere 13 to go!
Aug 29/13: wet-blocking another batch of hand-wash only hexis. With this heat, they’ll hopefully counteract this humidity and dry quickly.
Aug 31/13: 9 more to knit!
Sep 11/13: I still have 9 left to go, because I’ve been finishing up a raglan sweater for Kara and have been wet-blocking these damn hexis like mad for a little over a week. The photo which shows these in the fabric tote I’ve been keeping them in is 3 stacks deep and shows all the blocked hexis. Home stretch!
Sep 15/13: just another 5 left to knit, and I’m almost done blocking all of them! The green, machine-wash hexis are currently completing drying on the dining table, everything else but the 4 hexis I knit during the day today and yesterday are ready to go!
Oct 30/13: I’ve started working the final 5 hexis with the odds of Araucania Nature Wool that I have. This is all stuff I wouldn’t have been able to salvage for the coat, so no loss.
Oct 31/13: the final hexi was finished today! The last 5 are drying following their wet-blocking today.
Nov 5/13: this is my last week with Kara in daycare, so I’m hoping to get all my hexis joined in this time. Update: I’ve put in 5-1/2 hours of joining so far today and hope to do another 1/2-hour before bedtime. I’m estimating a total of 24(!) hours of joining to completion.
Nov 6/13: another 4 hours of joining today.
Nov 9/13: 2 hrs on Thursday, 7-1/2 hrs yesterday for 19-1/2 hrs so far. I’ll undoubtedly do more tonight.
Nov 10/13: 3-3/4 hrs yesterday for a grand total of 23-1/4 hrs, not incl. the 1/2 hr today.
Nov 11/13: 4-1/2 hrs yesterday in total, so 27-3/4 hrs so far.
Nov 12/13: finished working on it tonight after putting in about 3-1/2 hours today, bringing the total joining time to 31-1/4 hrs. Ugh! But it’s done! I’ve been taking some photos of progress as I go, but want to take a few pictures of the final product in good lighting before I upload everything. That should happen tomorrow! I am so happy this is done.
Nov 13/13: pictures are up!
