*Aedh wishes for the Cloths of Heaven*
by W. B. Yeats
Had I the heavens’ embroidered cloths,
Enwrought with golden and silver light,
The blue and the dim and the dark cloths
Of night and light and the half light,
I would spread the cloths under your feet:
But I, being poor, have only my dreams;
I have spread my dreams under your feet;
Tread softly because you tread on my dreams.
Yarn’s biography:
When i bought this yarn i saw “garter stitch”.
yarn was wound in balls when i bought it, unraveled from some “other” project, full of knots - but someone wanted to save and re-use it nontheless. am realizing someone else’s intentions. true colour is on the bad foto (the lace close-up). haven’t done the match-test yet, but it feels like 100% wool (the spit-welding is working well). thank goodness the knots got less by the time i reached the first lace section.
note to self: always reskein second-hand yarn before using it for a new project!
Love the way garter is intergrated in and out of the lace.

HOW I DID THE YOT -
after turning the yarn is infront of work, brought it under right needle and wrapped from back to front then knitted to marker
on the way back it’s: work lace edging, sm, k to yarn-over, knit yo tog. with next st., knit 3 and turn.
Row 26 on first side short-row section: 9sts remain on left needle - turn.
CENTER SHORT-ROW SECTION:
Row 22 - 5sts remain on left ndl.
Row 26 - 7sts remain on left ndl.
Row 48 - every odd k2tog is composed of 1st b4 yo + yo + 1st after yo.
even numbered k2togs are performed on plain single stitches.
end k8 = left ndl has 7sts + yo + 1st, these become 8sts.
Second side short-row section:
Row 48 - every other k2tog is performed on yo plus 2 following stitches.
BLOCKING
soaked in water with a few drops of olive-oil shampoo. hung over laundry line length-wise along central garter panel untill it stopped dripping, then pat-blocked it into shape on a towel and left it to dry. summer….
such a refined pattern. the garter looks like the tide on the beach.
when i started this project i found the undyed yarn quite dull and intended to thread an iridescent ribbon-tape along the edging. wish i could take decent fotos of the shimmering ribbon. the recipient can decide if she wants to keep the ribbon or pull it out. it gives the shawlette a “victorian look” and its colours are a bit of “the Cloths of Heaven”. it’s all very victorian !
