Notes

Don’t give in, Ines
by Rade Serbedzija

I know there will be more youth
But not like this one
Around 1938
I won’t have anyone to stay young with
If everybody grows old
And that youth will be hard for me
And you’re probably right
Because I’m alone on this coast
Which you all left and handed over listlessly

There is a 1000 year old wisteria on the grounds of the Otoshi Shrine in Japan, said to have been planted here in 960 and its branches are supported with beams to create a huge flower umbrella. This is why the wisteria is called “Sennen Fuji”. Sennen means 1000 years, Fuji means wisteria.

Wisteria is said to be one of the archipelago’s most ancient noted flowering trees, even being described in the collected poems of the Man’yoshu (Collection of Ten Thousand Leaves).

Wisteria is in full bloom around the beginning of May.
