The picot edge comes from traditional Latvian mittens (since I’m Latvian, the curse of them has been imposed on me inherently ;D), and knitters used simple patterns on the inner brim from the times when mammoths were wandering around the place; nowadays, we would say for the recipient’s private use. So do I.
