The blanket of (Mount) Doom: One blanket to warm them all…
Info:
This is a Lord of the Rings Afghan that I have made.
It is composed of 9 blocks representing different parts of Middle-Earth: The Tree of Gondor, The One Ring Script (in four panels), Gandalf’s Runes (that he carves on Bilbo’s door), The Doors of Durin, Mellon (Friend in Elvish), and The Banner of Rohan.
All of the squares were made in single crochet, with every other row done in single crochet in reverse. The colors were worked using the stranding method (I don’t care for the look of working over the unused yarn), so all the squares are backed in brown. The blocks were seamed together using the zipper method, but with both loops, not just the back loops. The whole blanket is edged with one row of single crochet.
Dimensions: 60” x 75”
Updates:
10/9/14: The top photo is a concept of what it will look like when finished (I’ll admit, it looks very silly). (ETA 2/13/15: this photo has been moved down to after the individual panels, as it is no longer the only example of what the front looks like! =D).
10/11/14: So far, I’m only working on the first block!
10/16/14: Two blocks down, seven to go!
10/24/14: The third block is done!
It’s turning out to be a lot bigger than I originally thought! Looking at the three blocks together, I can tell that the finished project is going to be about queen sized.
10/29/14: Working on the fourth block!
My goal at this point is to get at least all the squares, if not the full blanket, done by February!
11/9/14: I’m making the fifth front square right now!
I took a hiatus from making the front pieces to make one of the back pieces, which I finished. Each square will have its own back panel (to cover up the back yarn, and to make the blanket warmer). The back will all be the same color brown, but I thought it would drape better if each square had its own back.
11/24/14: Getting back to this after taking a brief Christmas-present-making excursion!
Almost done with the fifth square!
12/18/14: The sixth square is finished! The sixth square was the first of the four ring script panels. I feel that i’m in the home stretch now, even though I’m only 2/3 of the way done.
12/30/14: Added some WIP photos! You can see how big it’s going to be on a queen size bed. There’s also a picture of what the backs are going to look like, in the brown color. And lastly, all the yarn I have left in the project at this point!
1/5/15: Finished the second ring script panel! Only two more front panels, and six more backs to go!
2/6/15: I am starting the final front panel right now! I’m so excited to get this thing done! After the fronts are done, only five more backs to go! I took a break from making the blanket to work on other small projects, but I am back with full speed! Finishing this blanket is now my first priority!
2/13/15: The front panels are done! They’re done! It looks like a blanket now! Now, to finish the backs so it can all be stitched together!
3/15/15: All the panels are backed! Now to stitch it all together and edge it.
3/20/15: “It’s gone. It’s done.” “Yes, Mister Frodo. It’s over now.”
Yardage as of 1/1/15: 4532
