This was my easy peasy in flight, loafing in the sunshine Summer holiday project. I must have put in a lot of flying and lazing hours, because this shawl is enormous, I just kept going till all the balls were used up and then went and bought one more. It was a seriously enjoyable knit and the yarn was perfect for the pattern .. so cosy.
I thought long and hard about whether or not to reverse the texture on the second half. I knitted both ways to test but decided I enjoyed the rhythmic stitch pattern of the non reverse version more.
My shawl measures a whopping 73 x 36 inches so I’m counting on a cold winter. Here’s my recipe -
Begin with a 3 st garter tab cast on for 9 sts as per this tutorial.
Set up rows:
WS: k2, p5, k2
RS: k2, pm, m1L, k2, m1R, pm, k1 (centre stitch), pm, m1L, k2, m1R, pm, k2
WS: k2, sm, purl to last marker, sm, k2
Row 1: k2, sm, m1L, work to next marker, m1R, sm, k1, sm, m1L, work to next marker, m1R, sm, k2
Row 2: k2, sm, purl to last marker, sm, k2
Rows 1 and 2 form the Stocking Stitch pattern
Textured pattern -
RS: k2, sm, m1L, slip 1st as if to purl, k1, yo, pass slipped st over knitted and yo sts. Rep instructions in italics till next marker, m1R, sm, k1, sm, m1L, slip 1st as if to purl, k1, yo, pass slipped st over knitted and yo sts. Rep instructions in italics till last marker, m1R, sm, k2
WS: k2, sm, purl to last marker, sm, k2
Garter stitch pattern - knit each stitch on the RS. On the WS knit each stitch, aside from the centre stitch, which should be purled!
