I’ve used cotton for this as I preferred cotton for a bookmark. It is making up a lot larger than I expected. I’ll use this as a test run and I would probably adapt the pattern and make the head and body smaller if I make more.
The yarn is nice to work with and the pattern is pretty easy and fast. I wasn’t as careful as I could have been with the increases and decreases on the body. If I was wanting a perfect result I would use stitch markers.
I found this really fun to make because it develops character as the body parts are added. It is mostly crocheted in one piece, so it is fast to add the wings, legs, feet and comb.
I gave it four toes instead of three because i thought the big feet balanced the body and head size better.
I shortened the legs to 30 chain.

I tried him out in my book last night. Although he is bigger than bookmarks I am used to, he works well, and I’m enjoying having a bookmark that is so cute and characterful.
The size works well because his head and feet peek out from the top and bottom of the book.
This would make a great gift for kids and adults.
