I fell SO head-over-heels in love with this hat pattern and its unbelievable squishy cables that despite not having a good head/hair style for wearing hats - I’m being selfish and keeping this one for me - I love it! Has already had much wear and love through several January snow storms and still looks brand new, right off the needles.
Very well-written pattern, the instructions for the cables are both written and charted. And Thea always includes awesome tips and notes to help with any customizations and modifications for size.
Working Notes:
YARN: Yoth Father Honeydew Melon
SIZE: Large, 120 stitches
FIRST ATTEMPT: (Size 6 and 8 needles) Initially I wanted to knit the large size with a doubled brim. I knit 27 rounds of ribbing, the transition round, and one repeat of the twelve round pattern. I checked my yarn usage and remaining yarn. Besides being a potentially very dangerously close game of yarn chicken, I wasn’t happy with the cabled fabric, too stiff, my gauge was too tight and I really needed to go up a needle size.
SECOND ATTEMPT: (Size 6 and 9 needles)
- Alternate cable cast-on 120 stitches: 5 grams
- 14 rounds of ribbing and set-up round: 17.8 grams
- Three repeats of the main cable pattern; each repeat used approximately 18 grams
- Crown decrease Section: 8.2 grams
- Total Yarn Used: 85 grams
- 9” tall, approximately 19.5” circumference before blocking.
I was much, much happier with the cables, their “squishability”, and my gauge with the larger size 9 needles. I would definitely recommend and underscore the importance of swatching the cable pattern - not just for sizing, but to make sure you have “happy cables’ with just the right “squish” - that’s what makes this gorgeous hat shine!
