I think there was a mistake in the pattern. At the start of the green star it said:
’In the crown, you’ll be knitting 5 sections of 20 stitches each in each round.’
And then:
Rnd 1: ssk, k18 in white, k1 in green. Rep from to the end of the round.

the ssk is 2 stitches so it adds up to 21, not 20.
I adjusted my knitting to knit 17 and it looks fine.
