Notes

I have wanted to knit this adorable pattern for a long time. I opted to use the recommended yarn to make life easier. Like most of Lisa Chemery’s patterns, it’s well written and easy to follow for stress free knitting, resulting in a lovely garment. Highly recommend!

A note on the yarn:
I think this is a fine merino yarn. It’s soft enough and easy to find with lots of color options. However, take online photos with a grain of salt. I find the colors are almost always less saturated (duller) in person than photos show and I’m including my own photos in that statement. I tried to get a good representation of the color, but monitors vary, yada, yada. This color, beet red, is one of those that varies greatly in different light. Will look cooler in natural light and warmer in incandescent light, as to be expected, but based on online photos, I thought it would be much cooler and more saturated. Yeah, I should know better. By the way, I take my photos in natural light.

Gauge swatch on US10 and US10.5 metal cubics.

US10 = 4 st/inch pre-wet block
US10.5 = 3.5 st/inch pre-wet block

Edit:
After wash and lay flat to dry.

US10 = 3.75 st/inch
US10.5 = 3.5 st/inch

Cast on with US10.5, 12-18 months size. Got thru the collar and raglan set up.

Separated sleeves and made it to the first ruffle ridge with first skein. Have a few grams left of first skein, but I’m going to start the next skein so I don’t have to add it during the increase row.

Made it to second ridge and increase row.

I’m not really liking how my buttonholes are looking. I don’t know if I’m just not understanding the instructions, or what. If I did this again, I would have an odd number of sts on the button band so that the hole can be centered and/or find a better way to make a buttonhole. It looks off center and wonky.

Second skein knit. Got midway through the second tier.

BO body. Sleeves next.

I like this video for closing up underarm holes. Works like a charm. I didn’t do exactly that, since it’s bulky yarn on a baby sweater and not a lot of room for picking up extra sts, but used some of the ideas.

09-22-2021

Started on the first sleeve. US11 metal cubics. Arms tired from painting, so I didn’t get far.

I’ve learned over the years that I knit tighter in the round and so I go up a needle size when doing sleeves and then the sts look like they match the gauge of the rest of the sweater.

09-24-2021

Finished first sleeve. After the initial two decreases, decreased again at 5”.

I had knit the whole thing without additional decreases and cast off and it looked flared somehow. So I ripped it back to 5 inches, decreased 2 sts and finished the sleeve as written. Looks much better.

Finished knitting.

Not happy with the buttonhole band. I would do it differently next time. I’m hoping I can pull out the edge by the buttonholes during blocking to make it look straighter. As it is now, there’s a dip in by each buttonhole I think due to binding off a stitch there. I would do a different buttonhole if I knit this again.

Sweater has been washed, blocked, and dried flat. Sewed pink vintage buttons. Calling it done.

However, the button band is kind of mushy / wonky, it just doesn’t stand up the the tug of the button, and I think it could benefit from a fabric backing. I’ve never done that before, but this is one garment that seems to need it. Will have to think on that. Party for this weekend was canceled, otherwise it would already be gone.

A link on how to do a ribbon on buttonhole and button band.

I did not do anything to the buttonhole band. Oh well.

Gave Gracie her coat yesterday. Right after she opened it and her mom held it up for her to see, she hugged it excitedly. So adorable! Can’t wait to see her in it!

Gracie’s mom says, “Fit is perfect!”

Yay!
