I love this pattern. This is my fifth time knitting it and I plan to knit it again and again. This yarn is a favorite of mine and I think perfect for a baby blanket. Has some durability and can be machine washed and dried (remove from dryer while still damp). A new parent is not going to have the time to hand wash blankets. Babies make messes! While I love the feel and colors of the suggested yarn, I just can’t bring myself to give a baby gift made with it because it is hand wash only.
If there are techniques that are new to you in this pattern, there is a video which shows you exactly what to do step by step, linked here.
TIP:
I put st markers at the YO points. So I YO, slip marker, K1, YO. This helped me keep track of where I was in the pattern. I put a different color marker at the last half repeat to remind me to only K9 before K2tog (instead of K10). I also put different markers at the garter border to remind me to K there.
A note on this yarn:
It really is machine wash AND dry. The cotton needs the dryer to bloom and fluff up. If laid flat to dry, it will look more stringy. I dry it on low for about 30 mins, at that point it is just damp, and then lay it out overnight. By morning it is all dry and soft and good to go.
This yarn used to be called Spud & Chloe Sweater and now they’ve changed the name to Blue Sky Fibers Sweater. I guess they’re getting rid of the Spud & Chloe brand. This was really confusing for me when I was trying to order because it wasn’t coming up when I searched for Spud & Chloe.

Cast on 127 sts (pattern + 6 for 3 st garter border on the sides). Using metal cubics US9. Friction-y yarn moves better on the metal needles.
Did 4 rows of garter st and then started the pattern.
20 rows for each stripe.
Hand-dyed one of the colors because I don’t care for any of the greens of this line of yarn. Needed a minty green. Even though it’s got 45% cotton, it dyed nicely.

Decided to do a 2 row white strip between the colors. That’s going to be lots of ends to weave in. I think I’ll try Weavin’ Stephen this time and weave in as I go.
I’ve used this yarn many times and never have done this, but maybe I will this time. Going to try Very Pink Knits way of weaving in cotton ends. This yarn is 45% cotton, so hoping that the wool content is helping my past projects stay weaved in.
Edit: did not like either of these techniques for this yarn.

Knit 5 rows garter and BO on WS.
Knitting done. Just need to weave in ends.

I didn’t care for weaving stephen. Too lumpy, with this yarn at least. Thankfully, I only did it for a few ends on this blanket. The rest I weaved in after.
Very Pink knits cotton ends technique wasn’t so good either. The yarn would break as I tightened the knot, I suppose due to the wool content. Oh well.
Now I know!
