Notes

A quick knit as expected of a hat with chunky yarn. I used the written instructions and they were just fine. I love the resulting hat.

I opted a different cast on, which I think is fabulous and adds to the pattern. I found no errors in the pattern.

I always use magic loop when working in the round. This pattern is especially suited to magic loop because you repeat the instructions for a total of 2x for each round, as the hat is symmetrical.

This yarn is a good choice for this pattern. I was surprised that it hadn’t been used before. For my gauge with this yarn and my 22.5” head, I probably could have gone up a needle size, but after washing it grew a bit and fits better. I would say it fits perfectly. For a larger head, I would go up a needle size.

Cast on 72 sts on US9 metal cubics. Used alternating cable cast on, linked in this video. Watch till the end to see how to arrange your stitches for 2x2 ribbing. It looks a little fiddly, and it is, but it’s not hard and I was able to do it without a problem. I knit that first row as in the video k2p2. I probably could have done ktbl, but oh well. I think it looks fine.

I chose not to do the cast on as the pattern instructs because I didn’t see any advantage to doing the german twisted cast on, and I think alternating cabled cast on looks nice on ribbing, nicer than the long tail + german twisted cast on, IMO, and easier to do.

After knitting the garter ribbed section, I slipped the first purl stitch so as to match the pattern of the other cast on which starts and ends with a purl. I used the written instructions.

Switched to US10 metal cubics after ribbing.

This yarn has a different kind of feel to it. I like it. It’s spongy and sort of velvety soft. It did untwist a bit during cast on, which is annoying, but not a problem.

I started this and then immediately had to put it on hold to knit a doll sweater for my nephew. I’ll be seeing him this weekend, so want to do it now. Be back soon!

Knitting finished. A little on the small side. We’ll see if it fits well enough after washing and drying flat. Right now I think I should’ve gone up a needle size. If it doesn’t fit me, I’ll give it to Christin.

Circumference 17”
Height 8”

33g left. So used at least 67g. I’ll weigh the FO once it’s dry. You could make a pretty amazing pom pom out of the leftover yarn. I had planned to use a faux fur pom that I have, so I probably won’t make one.

edit: Hat used 72g of yarn.

Final size 17” circumference x 8.75” height.

It, of course, grew with washing. I didn’t pin it, just let it dry down as it would. I know with wearing, it will stretch out a bit. We’ll see how it wears, but it seems to fit ok now. It softened up quite a bit with washing and is far more stretchy.

The yarn got a soft halo with washing. It is very soft and squishy.

Sewed on faux fur pom pom. I used one with a snap. You sew on one side of the snap and the pom pom has the other side of the snap. This way, you can remove the pom pom when washing the hat.

Pom pom from etsy. There’s tons, just do a search for faux fur pom pom.
