My favorite thing about this project is the cowl neck I added instead of the mock turtle neck. I knit tightly, so my poncho (sweater?) came out a bit smaller, which is fine with me, it fits well.

US 10 needle on bottom ribbing. US 10.5 needle on body. Knit to halfway thru decreases on front last night.

Now to the “Left Front Edge” section. There is errata and I’m very peeved that this has not been corrected on the pdf. Really, is it that hard?
later…
OMG! I decoded this part of the pattern. Why so cryptic?!
This is what I’m doing:
I somehow ended on a WS row. So to get back on track, I’m just going to knit one row and then continue from there. Otherwise, I’ll be on the opposite side for the rest of the section and my brain doesn’t want to convert it. So here goes:
RS row: knit
WS row: bo 3 sts purl to end of section
RS row: k2, k2tog, k to end of left front edge section
WS row: bo 3 sts purl to end of section
RS row: k2, k2tog, k to end of left front edge section
WS row: bo 2 sts purl to end of section
10 sts decreased, 14 sts remaining.
Followed instructions to decrease 1 stitch each row for 12 rows, as written.
“Right Front Edge” section
Joined yarn on the WS and purled one row to make it match the left front edge.
RS row:bo 3 sts knit to end
WS row: p2, p2tog, purl to end
RS row:bo 3 sts knit to end
WS row: p2, p2tog, purl to end
RS row:bo 2 sts knit to end
10 sts decreased, 14 sts remaining
Okay, now the pattern has 2 different instructions for decreasing the left edge and right edge, why? On the left, she has you decreasing 1 stitch on the RS and 1 stitch on the WS. On the right edge she has you decrease 2 stitches on the RS and no decrease on the WS. WHY? wouldn’t the left and right match better if you did both left and right one of those ways?
Okay, so I followed the pattern instructions and decreased 2 sts on the RS rows, because who am I to question the pattern, right? Well, this didn’t work out very nicely when you get to the last few rows and you don’t have enough stitches to ssk. So I p2tog on the last row of the stockinette section, so as to have decreased down to 2 sts in 12 rows. Phew! Glad the first side is done!

Purchased buttons at Rhinebeck over the weekend. Was so pleased to find unique buttons for my project. Unfortunately, one got broken (husband). Trying to get a new one from the website, but my color is not on there.

Also learned to keep the buttons from getting broken when washing the garment, to cover with foil and turn garment inside out. Of course, they have to be installed first, and not get broken before they even get installed.
Later…
I was able to contact Melissa and get some more buttons hooray!

Finished knitting the back panel, attached the two sides at the shoulder seams, and picked up stitches on one side and started the ribbing.
Took a long break from knitting this…

Tubular Bind Off: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W0WDD36dc-k
After set up rows at 4:30 starts with tapestry needle.
Knit 9 rows of ribbing before the 2 set up rows for bind off. Switched to US9 needles for set up rows.

Picked this up again. Ribbing knit and tubular bind off on both sides completed. Just have the neck left to do.

Decided I wanted a cowl neck. Pretty much followed ashley1214’s instructions except after the final increase did 12 rounds, then 2 set up rounds with 10.5 needle on the right. I forgot to change the left needle! Oh well. Then tubular bind off. Final collar/neck length is 9.5 inches tall before blocking. I expect everything to grow with blocking.
Can’t believe I am finally done knitting this thing! Yippee!
Later…
Ends weaved in and sweater is blocked. Now just to wait for it to dry. I’d like to call it done, but I think it’s not done until it can be worn, and there’s still the matter of sewing the sides and attaching buttons. Pictures uploaded of the piece laid out to dry.
Pre-blocking
22.5” across the widest part (chest)
22.5” tall
9.5 h x 11 at widest part of cowl
Blocked to
26” wide
28” tall
10.5 h x 13 w cowl
Sweater sprang back a bit once it was dry, so ended up being somewhere in-between.

Sewed the sides together a bit. I tried to sew on buttons, but I just didn’t like it with buttons. The placement hit right on the underside of my arm and it bothered me. So took them back off. I butted the 2 ribbed edges and sewed about 5-6 inches. I went up higher than the pattern instructs starting where an arm hole would be on a sweater. It just looks better that way on me the way mine turned out. The one thing that’s bothering me is the ribbing on the shoulders is kind of stiff and sticks out. Reviewing other’s finished projects, the vast majority look this way too. I think it is due to the tubular bind off. If I were to do it again (and I won’t), I’d probably do a different bind off in order for it to be a bit more flexible and less stiff. I’ll admit, it is pretty cool the way the edge looks though, the way the knitting wraps around.
Callin ‘er finished! Phew!

Two years since I finished this. I didn’t wear it much last winter. This winter, I’ve worn it quite a bit and really love it now. I think I needed to find the right top to wear under it. I just washed it in the washer on gentle wash in a mesh bag with wool wash and laid it out to dry. It still looks perfect.
