Notes

Knit this one for 4 year old Gracie. Plan to have matching hats for us all. It fits her well.

12-19-2023

Knit swatch flat. US6 metal cubics for ribbing and US7 metal cubics for stockinette. Will go up a needle size for knitting in the round as I do. Got 5 sts/inch.

Washed this yarn repeatedly to get the excess dye out. Fingers crossed!

09-08-2024

On US7 metal cubics cast on 89 sts, using crochet provisional cast on. Decreased to 88 sts when joining in the round. Starting with 107g ball of Twill.

09-11-2024

Knit to about 4.5” maybe a little less, and then folded brim and joined red. Switched to US8 needle. Brim is about 2.25” once folded and joined. Hat is looking kinda small. Hats do at the beginning though.

09-14-2024

Knit red until piece measures 5” tall from edge and then start decreases.

09-15-2024

Knitting finished. Still needs a pompom. Also needs blocking to smooth it out first. I hope the yarn doesn’t bleed!

09-18-2024

Washed and blocked. It did not bleed due to my prewashing. I used the coldest tap water and a very small amount of wool wash. The water had the tiniest tint. Upon inspection it was just red lint, not excess dye.

Really glad I took the chance to block it. It looks so much better all smoothed out. Just waiting for it to dry now. Then I’ll measure it and see if it is big enough for Benny or should it go to Gracie.

09-21-2024

Hat seems dry. Looks so nice after getting smoothed out by washing/blocking. I still need to make a pompom for it. I plan to have the kids try it on before I start on another. A little on the small side. I think this would fit Gracie better. I was planning to knit one for her anyway.

Base of red 8.25” wide (16.5” circumference)
Ribbing 8.5” wide (17” circumference)
Height 15.5”

I forgot to bring it with me when I saw the kids. I did measure their heads. Gracie’s head is 18.5”, which is a half inch bigger than a year ago. Benny’s head is 21” which is also a half inch bigger than last year. So Gracie gets the hat. She doesn’t really like wearing hats, but maybe she’ll keep it on long enough for a picture.

11-09-2024

40g brim
54g red
20g pompom

Gracie’s hat fit her just about perfectly! So cute!
