This two color pattern utilizes a foreground and background color. After four cells, in my case, the colors switch. That results in the columnwise checkered pattern. After 2.5 cell repeates, the entire pattern restarts. The background yarn becomes the foreground.

You should now have 5 checkered blocks setup with a selvedge stitch on each edge. (82 stitches).

Setup row2: Purl all stitches matching color.

From this point on, always knit and purl stitches using the same color presented.

The checkered blocks should now be approximately square.

For this scarf, I made 50 pattern repeats.

Understanding: The constant cabling back and forth results in a slightly narrower pattern than one expects. Although each cell is worked over 4 stitches, it appears to be a 3 stitch pattern. Hence, the setup and final rows are worked as if a 3 stitch pattern.

For finishing, a very hot steam iron is all that’s needed. The stitch produces a natural tension in the fabric, casuing it to curl around the edges. A hot iron, and copious amounts of steam relaxes the fibers, allowing it to lay flat.
