Notes

Bought sample pack….1 oz of every color in their palette. I sorted off black, white, the purples and pastel greens. Now what??

Estimate it is about 4000 yards.

09-15-2023 Step One: Make a big rectangle

OK, I think I have settled on KT131 (KX), SS 7, 161 needles.
Motif: Kathleen Kinder’s Linked Medallions (Fig. 36 Patt 5, p. 63, Mosaic Floatless Fair-Isle)
Foreground: Warms. Background: Cools. Offset by half a ball.
1x1 ribbing, 5 rows beginning and ending. Tubular CO and BO.
3 stitches reverse stockinette each edge (back bed, N, SS 6).
Spit-splice yarns for continuous feed.

09-21-2023 Off we go!

I cast on with blue (Cool) and worked 5 rows of ribbing before beginning pattern. The blue ran out just shy of 100 rows.

I can start to see the patterning. This motif chart, with its equal balance of black and white squares, will make for a rich but subtle overall woven look, I think, that will unify the whole but not call attention to itself as the colors flow one into the other in staggered fashion.

10-16-2023 Knitting complete

Finished the last stripe, RC 1960, then one row stockinette at SS 6. 5 rows 1x1 ribbing, then scrap off and graft.

YARN USAGE STATS, FOR REFERENCE

(1960 + 16) x 167 = Abt. 330,000 total stitches

Total weight 38.25 oz or 1086 g

8627 stitches/oz or 3039 stitches/100 g

144” x 30” or 30 sq. ft.

10-23-2023 The next step(s)

After sitting with this piece for awhile, I decided to cut it into two pieces to make a poncho (61”) and a rectangular wrap (83”). I ran thin circular knitting needles through the stitches about an inch apart, snipped an edge strand between, and unraveled a row to separate the sections neatly. I will use some lovely Blue-Faced Leicester I haven’t found a good use for to add collars or borders as needed, after blocking the pieces first.
