I tried 9 mm safety eyes on my first attempt at the head, but they were way too big. Went down to 6 mm and thought they were much better.
On the head, the first one I did per directions and it seemed much too round to me (more like a mouse head and less like a horse’s). So ripped back and redid adding 5 extra rounds when at 32 stitches, liked it much better, maybe could have even added another round or two. I put scrap yarn for the eyes on round 15 on the bar between stitches 11 and 12 and stitches 17 and 18. Seemed to be a pretty good placement. I put the eyes in just before the k2tog, k5 round.
For the legs, I reversed directions to start at the body, started with jmco. I find this gives me a better edge for sewing and I don’t have to try and hide the cast on edge. For the front legs, I put almost no stuffing at the body end to make sewing easier. Next time I would also do that for the back legs.
There didn’t seem to be enough rounds of the contrast color at the feet. The first one I did per directions but then ripped back and added 3 more rounds.
The horn I first made per directions but it seemed a little small to me. Made another, starting with jmco and 9 stitches. Did decreases and make sure to stuff as you go. Even with forceps, I couldn’t get stuffing in at the end.
The ear I didn’t like at all (it was worked flat). Redid those in the round, starting with jmco and 16 sts. I wanted them wide enough so they could fold inward. Took me a couple tries to get one that I was happy with.
For the mane, I couldn’t quite figure out the directions so just cast on 3 stitches and did loop stitch every other row until it was long enough. Then sewed that on back of head and down onto back. Seemed to work great.
When sewing together, next time I would do the legs before the ears and horn, would have meant less for my sewing yarn to catch on.
