180 ends
10 dent reed
2.5 yard warp
18” wide on the loom
Off the loom - 17” x 56”
After finishing - 16” x 51” (almost 61” with fringe - about 5’)
I spun the yarn for the overshot weft during the A Spinner’s Study New Year’s Eve Spin In 2019 (it was the coarse section of a raw fleece I was given). I had bought some Harrisville yarn on sale to make projects like this. I love weaving overshot.
I used the bottom treadling sequence on page 118 of the book The Handweaver’s Pattern Directory. It was an easy pattern to treadle, and it was easy to figure out where I was in the pattern.
I twisted the shuttles when they arrived on the same side to lock the yarns.
I didn’t have to beat hard to get the weave to be even.
5 rows of plain weave at each end, and hemstitching over 2 warp threads and 3 weft threads.
I used up every bit of the handspun, and it worked perfectly with the length of the warp!! So happy!!
I cut the fringe to 6” before twisting. 25 rounds of the twister before tying in knot. 4 threads for each fringe (2/twister clip).
Ended with with about 15” of loom waste!!
Gave it a rough bath between a tub of very hot water and one of ice water, with blue Dawn soap. After a rinse, and spin in the machine to remove water, I dried it in the dryer. Steam pressed to finish.
The commercial yarn shrunk more than the handspun.
Note to Self
When there are more ends than the exact number for repeats divide the excess to either side to balance out the weaving.
