This was a stash busting weave along with Janet and Tien.
For the warp I used some handspun silk and linen, silk gima/ribbon (I dyed the fibre and silk gima together), handspun merino (fibre that I dyed similar colours, but each fibre type took the dye differently so they all came out slightly different), and some natural silk and merino handspun (just to make the warp a bit wider). Also a small bit of thicker merino from when I was sampling the fibre.
The weft is an undyed KnitPicks baby alpaca and silk lace weight yarn (Bare Shimmer Lace) - so soft, with a slight halo.
3.5 yard warp
382 ends (used up all my handspun and silk gima)
12 dent reed sleyed 2-1-2-1… for 18epi
22” in the reed
After sampling (cutting off and washing) the 4 shaft twill pattern on my warp, I realized the pattern was too messy looking with my busy warp, so switched to plain weave. I recently read somewhere that you can have a busy warp or a busy weaving pattern but not both and I guess it is true.
I wove the whole length of the rest of the warp in plain weave.
Hemstitched both ends over 4 weft threads and 4 warp threads.
Fresh off the loom it was 83”x20.5”
Twisted the 5.5” fringe in bundles of 4 (ended up being about 4.25”).
After washing (a long soak in hot water, then agitating in hot then cold water a few times), rinsing, spinning in the machine and drying the the dryer until almost dry. Then a steam press.
The finished piece was 79”x21” with 4” fringe.
It is beautiful, soft and drapey.
To make the poncho I cut the fabric in half and serged the cut ends. Stitched the cut ends under the sides closest to the fringe ends. I did stitch some 4” darts at the shoulders to make it fit better (the dart was about 1.5” at the neck, so 3” removed).
It came out to a perfect size poncho - not too long on the arms halfway between my wrists and elbows, and almost to my knees with the fringe.
