Cuffs
I used a long tail tubular cast on, then I did the two set-up rows. This video explains it superbly. http://ysolda.com/tutorial/tubular-cast-on/
After that, I knit one row at the same time as I rearranged the stitches to get a 2x2 rib.
To rearrange:
K1, rearrange the next two stitches, move knit stitch in front of purl stitch, k1, p2 and repeat!
Before you join in the round, take a look at your knitting and see if you like one side better than then the other. I find that my tubular cast-ons look a bit different on each side. The one that looks the best, is the one you want to be on he outside of your knitting. So join round, or knit one more row and then join round, depending on how you would like it to be.
Personally I like making two of the same at once. So I cast on both mittens and did the cuffs at the same time. The rest of the mittens I will do one at a time.
Hands and palms
This is pretty straight foreward. Just follow the pattern, the only tip I have for this part is to use markers instead of counting rows (just read the pattern and you will understand where you need to put your markers).
Thumb
After all this lovely construction work it felt a bit strange with a regular bind-off. So I went for a tubular-bind-off!
http://ysolda.com/blog/2014/3/28/technique-thursday-tubul.... The video is for a 1x1 rib, but the technique is the same for the 2x2.
If you do something similar, keep the set-up rows tight that the thumb opening doesn’t open up like a flower. You want it flexible, but not too flexible ;-)
Total amount of yarn spent - 40g. Remember, the amount of yarn spent will vary according due to variations in yarn, gauge and the knitter! Personally I was worried that I would run out before I even started, but I also knew that these mittens were supposed to be knitted in this yarn!
