I thought a pair of texting gloves would be cool for my boyfriend so I adapted Leigh Radford’s Unisex Gloves with a mistake rib cuff and a thumb flap. The only problem is that I’ve had to monkey around with the number of stitches and I think my gauge is off to the point where the glove that should be about 8 1/2” around the hand is almost 10”. I want to give them to him for a Valentine’s Day gift and I won’t see him until Valentine’s Day… perhaps I should make one glove and if it fits, send him the other one? Hm. If it doesn’t fit at the end, I’ll rip it out and do it over. If nothing else, knitting has taught me that patience. If you don’t do it right the first time, you get it on the second. I’m excited! :) I just tried on what I have so far (past the thumb gusset) and I could potentially line the gloves with fleece to add some extra bulk. Shame I can’t get them to him within a few days. The high temperature for Monday is supposed to be 12.
This first attempt (see above) was frogged and re-done with a lesser stitch count. I finished the first glove and it fits me much better: looser, but not to the point that they’ll be big on him.
Improvised is the wrong word, as far as the pattern goes. There is no other glove quite like this on the planet, but there are pieces of it. I took the Mistake Rib from The Knitter’s Bible for the cuff, used the Unisex Glove pattern from Leigh Radford’s One Skein for the hand and fingers, and did actually improvise the thumb flap. I had some trouble getting the size right and had to start other three times with different stitch counts. The yarn threw off my gauge so I had to adjust. But now that the first is done, I love it! I can’t wait for my guy to try them on. I hope they fit… but if they don’t… :\ They should. I had to ask him over the phone what all the measurements of his fingers were. The gloves aren’t a surprise anymore, obviously, but he’ll still like them. ^ ^ This was a really fun thing to do, figuring out all the logistics. I think I may have crossed a threshold into the world of designing…! How exciting is that!
