A white supremacist came to my town to spew hatred. What better time to donate money to a local nonprofit and make a unicorn lovey?
This project was super fun. I combined the head & arms from the Unicorn & Horse pattern and the blanket portion of the Fluffy Unicorn Afghan. I used an N hook for both components. In retrospect, I wish I had used a brighter orange, or maybe added in an extra bright purple, but I’m happy with the overall look.
Here are my mods:
On the head & arms:
I make BIG lovey toys. I held the yarn quadrupled (three strands of Big Twist and one strand of Lion Brand Pound of Love) to make the white parts.
Head/horn:
- I did not do any color changes on the nose and did not stitch any nostrils.
- I made the horn as written, but if I made it again I would make it slightly smaller. I made the horn out of a ton of strands (like 6? 8? I can’t remember) of the Patons Glam Stripes so that it would be sparkly.
- I used 21mm safety eyes ordered from Amazon (these only work because the lovey is so huge from holding 4 strands together, otherwise I would have used much smaller ones)
- For the mane, I found a hardcover book (my 2016 calendar/planner, in fact) and wrapped yarn around it a bunch. Slipped it off the book and cut it so that all the strands would be equal lengths. Laid them all out in separate colored piles. Then I started with pink in the front (because the arms were mostly blue-green-yellow, I wanted the contrast) and started attaching the pieces the same way you would attach doll hair (if you aren’t sure how to do this, this is where I learned: http://www.thefriendlyredfox.com/2016/09/how-to-attach-ha...) except I made them VERY dense so the mane would be super thick and luxurious. Then I worked my way down the back of the head, switching from pink --> orange --> yellow --> green --> blue.
Arms:
I made the arms as written, except I made the following color changes:
- Rows 1 - 5: blue
- Rows 6 - 8: green
- Rows 9 - 11: yellow
- Rows 12 - end: white
Blanket:
I made the blanket as written, except I made the following color changes and changed the stitches in the final rounds:
- Rows 1 - 5: white
- Row 6: yellow
- Row 7: orange
- Row 8: pink
- Row 9: blue
- Row 10: green
- Rows 11-12: white
- Row 13: orange
- Row 14: pink
- Row 15: blue
- Row 16: green
- Row 17: yellow
- Row 18: white
- Row 18: white, followed same pattern but changed stitch to hdc to make it shorter
- Row 19: white reverse sc all the way around the edge for a nice weighted edge
If I made this again, I would have considered doing one more band of color and making the blanket portion larger. If so, I would have done the following color sequence: pink, blue, green, yellow, orange. In other words, I kept the same ROYGBIV colors next to each other but switched up which colors I started with as I moved down the blanket.
I LOVED making this project. I’ve been on a lovey kick for the past few months but this is hands down my favorite I have ever made. <3
