I knit a single-layer cable band (see chart in my photos), and picked up around it from the wrong side so that it would turn up properly.

I picked up 2-in-3 stitches around the band because 1-1 seemed like too many.

After working the halo, I decreased the top to about 20 st and then gathered the remaining stitches, rather than grafting them, since grafting made goofy pokey-out corners. :)
