Another beautiful design from Jennifer Weissman! She’s one of the most talented designers around, and I’ve never encountered better written patterns from anyone. Instructions are both written and charted, so something for everyone.
I used an unusual 4-ply yarn with very little twist. Two of the strands are an apricot color, one is pink and the fourth strand is a golden pumpkin color. So if you look closely, this very soft, cashmere yarn has a heathered look to it.
The designer gave me permission to make this a slouchy hat rather than a beanie. I accomplished this by merely using larger needles and by using a double strand for the entire body of the hat. Since my DK weight yarn was on the light side, doubling it resulted in a bulky weight yarn suitable for size 9 US needles. (See below for all the needle sizes I used as well as the finished hat measurements.)
If I had not used a double strand for the hat body, 1 skein of yarn (221 yards / 202 meters) would have been enough.
The diamond/lattice stitch brim is lined with 2 x 1 ribbing which makes this hat super cozy.
I used a combo of 3 different yarns for the pom pom - a little of the same yarn as the hat, and small amounts of some Andula hand dyed and Esterillas hand dyed from Chile.
Needles used:
Size 3 US - Brim, including 2 x1 ribbed lining
Size 6 US - Rounds 1 - 2 of hat body
Size 7 US - Rounds 3 - 4 of hat body
Size 8 US - Rounds 5 - 6 of hat body
Size 9 US - Remainder of hat, including crown
Finished Measurements:
Brim circumference, unstretched - 20”
Circumference at widest part - 28”
Diameter, measured flat - 11”
Height of hat, curved measurement - 11”
(2.125” brim + 3.875” hat body + 5” crown decreases)
Weight of finished hat, including pom pom - 3.5 oz (99.2 grams)
The pullover I’m wearing is called “Merewood,” pattern and design by Jennifer Wood.
